Before the likes of Sam Smith, Emeli Sande, Adele, and Daley there was George Michael.

With so much talent coming from the U.K, its certain that George Michael made it possible for such artists to experience success internationally. In the early 80s the British singer rose to fame with the group ‘Wham.’ The group had several hits such as “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” and “Careless Whisper.” But it wasn’t until George’s solo career that gave him his international success.

George Michael’s 1987 solo debut album Faith, had many success, with four singles such as “One More Try,” “Faith,” “Monkey,” but it was one in particular that will forever be a favorite and that’s “Father Figure.” The track starts with a confession: That’s all I wanted something special – something sacred, now as a kid I didn’t know what I was singing but as I got older I realize that the song was about loving someone in every aspect; wanting them to be your every object of affection, which is pretty deep right? Ok! George Michael.

“Father Figure” has this sensual seduction feeling to it, read some of the lyrics

I will be your father figure
(Oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine
(I’d love to)
I will be your preacher teacher
(Be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind
(It would make me)
I will be your father figure
(Very happy)
I have had enough of crime
(Please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
‘Til the end of time

Even though the song was written way before George Michael’s homosexuality was public knowledge, I often times wonder was he singing about a hidden affair but I guess we will never know. The music video was a Hollywood model drama between himself and a real life supermodel Tania Coleridge, the opening of the video shows her walking through the streets and picks up a taxi and of course he’s the driver.

Take a look at the video below…

George Michael was an singer, songwriter, and record producer with such a great talent, you can’t name an international pop star with saying his name.

May he rest in peace.
